Light Filtering Shades
Light filtering shades that soften the day
Keep the room bright and connected to the outside, without the glare, the fading or the feeling of living in a display window.
Light filtering fabrics are the default choice for the rooms you use during the day. They take the hard edge off direct sun, protect furniture and floors from constant UV, and give daytime privacy while daylight still comes through.
The right weave depends on the direction the window faces and how close the neighbours are. We compare two or three opacities in the actual room rather than choosing from a catalogue.
Every project is measured on site, ordered to your exact openings, installed by our own team, and tested with you before we leave.

Two Different Problems
Glare control and daytime privacy aren't the same thing
A window can have too much glare, too little privacy, or both, and the right weave depends on which problem matters more in that room.
A tighter weave gives more privacy but a softer view; a more open weave keeps the outward view sharper but lets more contrast through. We compare both against your actual window rather than assuming one answer fits every room.
Orientation
Choosing opacity by which way the window faces
South and west-facing
Stronger, more direct sun, a slightly denser weave keeps glare and heat down.
North and east-facing
Softer light through most of the day, a more open weave keeps the room bright without losing daylight.
Applications
The rooms you actually use during the day
Living rooms
Softens direct sun on screens and seating without closing the room off.
Kitchens
Cuts glare over counters and sinks while keeping the space bright.
Home offices
Reduces the screen glare that shifts through the working day.
Dining rooms
Keeps a bright, comfortable space for daytime use.
Being Straight About Limits
What light filtering fabric won't do at night
Light filtering shades are built for daytime comfort, not night-time privacy. Once interior lights are on, a silhouette can still be visible from outside.
Where evening privacy matters as much as daytime brightness, we usually recommend pairing the shade with drapery, or reviewing a room-darkening fabric for that specific window.
Choosing Fabric
What to look for in a light filtering weave
- A texture and colour that reads well from both inside and outside the home
- An opacity tested against your own furniture and floor, not a showroom sample
- Consideration of whether the room also needs an evening privacy layer
- Coordination with any blackout shades nearby, for a consistent look room to room

Frequently asked questions
Light Filtering Shades: your questions answered.
Do light filtering shades give privacy at night?
Not fully. With interior lights on, silhouettes can be visible. Rooms that need evening privacy usually pair a light filtering shade with drapery or use a room-darkening fabric.
How do they compare with sheer shades?
Sheer shades have adjustable vanes between two layers of fabric, which gives more control at the cost of a deeper stack. Light filtering rollers are simpler and sit tighter to the glass.
Do light filtering shades protect furniture from fading?
They reduce the UV reaching rugs, art and upholstery near the window, though nothing eliminates fading entirely on very sun-exposed pieces.
Can I get light filtering fabric in a roman shade instead of a roller?
Yes. The same opacity idea applies to roman shades, which suit rooms that want fabric folds and softness alongside light control.
Will a light filtering shade fade in strong sun?
Quality fabrics are chosen to resist fading, but very strong, direct west sun will shorten the life of any fabric over years of daily use.
How is this different from a solar screen fabric?
A solar screen keeps a clear view through and is measured by openness factor; light filtering fabric is tighter and diffuses the view rather than keeping it clear.
